About Guildford
Guildford is the centre of gravity for everything we do, and it shows in the variety of work we are called out to here. In a single week we might quote a resin drive on a new-build close off the A3, a block-paving restoration on a 1930s semi near London Road, and a forecourt resurface for a business on the Slyfield estate. The town's mix of period housing, post-war suburbs, and steady new development means almost every surfacing problem in our trade turns up somewhere in the GU postcodes.
The geography matters more than people expect. Guildford sits on a gap in the chalk where the River Wey cuts through the North Downs, so ground conditions swing from free-draining chalk and sand up on the Hog's Back to heavier, wetter clay down towards the river and the water meadows. That changes how we build a sub-base — a drive in Onslow Village behaves very differently from one in Burpham — and it is the first thing we check on a site visit.
Because we are based around Guildford, the crew is usually only a short drive from your door. We can normally get out for a site visit within a few working days, and for commercial enquiries — car parks, private roads, reactive pothole work — we can often move faster than that.
Areas we cover in Guildford
A lot of Guildford's most characterful housing — the streets around Pewley Hill, Charlotteville, and the older parts of Shalford — sits in or near conservation areas, where the look of a frontage genuinely matters. On those properties we tend to steer owners towards block paving or natural materials that suit the age of the house rather than a finish that fights it.
Where a property is listed or in a conservation area, surfacing usually still falls under permitted development, but it is worth checking before you commit to a colour or material. We will tell you honestly at the site visit if we think a finish risks looking wrong on the building, because a drive that clashes with the house is a false economy however well it is laid.
The newer estates around Slyfield, Park Barn, and the developments feeding off the A3 are a different job entirely. Here the houses are modern, the frontages are often smaller, and resin-bound surfacing tends to win — it is seamless, permeable straight out of the box, and reads as contemporary against new brick and render.
Builders' driveways on new estates are frequently laid to a minimum spec, so a few years in we get called to lift a thin, failing surface and rebuild the base underneath properly. If your drive is dipping or holding water on a relatively new house, that is usually what has happened, and it is fixable.
Surfacing in Guildford
Yes — we cover the GU1 to GU5 area and the surrounding villages, from Worplesdon and Jacobs Well in the north to Shalford and Bramley in the south, plus Merrow, Burpham, and out along the Hog's Back. If you are on the edge of the area and not sure, give us a call and we will confirm.
It depends where you are. Up on the chalk and sand around the Hog's Back the ground drains freely and the base build is straightforward. Down towards the Wey and the water meadows the clay holds water, so we often add a geotextile membrane and a deeper sub-base to stop the drive settling. We assess this at the site visit.
Guildford is our home patch, so we can usually be on site for a free survey within a few working days. For commercial jobs — car parks, private roads, reactive pothole repairs — we can often move quicker, and we will give you a realistic date when you call.
We work in Guildford's conservation areas regularly. Surfacing usually still falls under permitted development, but the look matters, so we focus on materials and colours that suit the period of the house. Where there is any doubt about restrictions, we will flag it before you commit.
