About Godalming
Godalming is a compact, hilly town with a surprising variety of housing stock, and that variety keeps our work here interesting. In a typical week we might be quoting a resin driveway on a detached house in Busbridge, relaying a block-paved path at a Victorian semi in Farncombe, and pricing a car park resurface for a business near the town centre. The older streets climbing up from the River Wey towards Ockford Ridge and the lanes around Binscombe have genuine period character, and the grounds around Charterhouse School include some of the largest private tarmac and path areas we work on anywhere in the GU7 postcode.
The topography is the practical consideration that comes up on almost every Godalming site visit. The town sits in the Wey valley but rises sharply on both sides, and many driveways here are on a meaningful gradient. A sloped drive demands more careful thinking about surface water run-off, drainage channels, and the direction of fall to make sure water is not directed towards the house or the public footway. We factor this in at the design stage rather than treating it as an afterthought.
The underlying geology here is largely Greensand and Hythe Beds, with clay making an appearance in the lower-lying areas around Farncombe and towards Catteshall. That clay holds water, and on drives in those areas we tend to build a slightly more substantial base with membrane separation to prevent the surface course from working loose once the clay swells and contracts through the seasons.

A significant proportion of Godalming properties sit on slopes that would be considered gentle in a mountainous region but are steep enough to matter when you are laying a hard surface. The key risk on a sloped drive is surface water running to the wrong place, either pooling against a garage door or front step, or sheeting off the drive and onto the pavement, which is both a nuisance and a potential liability.
On any drive with a noticeable gradient we design in a drainage channel or a linear drain at the low point, and we consider whether a permeable surface is the right call rather than a solid one. A resin-bound surface on a permeable base, for example, absorbs light rain across its whole area rather than shedding it all to one edge. We talk through the drainage strategy at the site visit, and if we think a channel drain is essential rather than optional, we say so.
Godalming has a core of genuinely old buildings in and around the High Street and Church Street, as well as a large number of late-Victorian and Edwardian villas in the residential streets above the valley floor. These houses look their best with materials that have some natural variation to them, and it is worth thinking about this before committing to a finish.
On period properties here, we most often lay block paving in a traditional style or a resin-bound aggregate using a warmer, mixed-tone stone rather than a plain grey. Both options give a result that sits comfortably against old brick and tile. We are also asked regularly about patios and rear garden surfacing on these properties, where the same logic applies: a natural-aggregate resin or a good-quality paving slab reads much better than plain tarmac against a Victorian garden wall.

We look at this carefully on the site visit and will recommend whether a channel drain, a linear drain, or a permeable surface is the right answer for the specific gradient and direction of fall.
It can. Greensand soils drain well but have low bearing capacity, so we sometimes need a deeper sub-base than you would on a firmer, more stable ground. In the lower-lying parts of Farncombe and Catteshall, where clay is more common, we typically add a geotextile membrane to prevent the clay from working up into the base over time.
