Surfacing in Cobham

A disproportionate share of the resin-bound work we do in Surrey comes from the Cobham, Fairmile, and Oxshott-edge area. The reason is straightforward: when a house is worth what houses in this postcode are worth, a budget driveway reads immediately as out of place, and owners know it. Resin bound in a natural aggregate — a warm flint, a buff quartzite, or a darker basalt mix — does justice to properties that deserve a proper finish.

Block paving is equally popular here, particularly on older period homes in the village and along the older lanes of Stoke D'Abernon where a contemporary resin finish would fight the architecture. On those properties we tend to work with natural-tone clay pavers or a tumbled concrete paver that has some age and movement to it, rather than a crisp modern block. The right choice depends on the building, and we will always give a straight opinion at the quote stage rather than pushing the product with the better margin.

The clay subsoil that runs through much of the Cobham valley is one of the more demanding ground conditions we work in. It shrinks in a dry summer and swells in a wet winter, and a driveway base that was not built deep enough — or without a geotextile separator between the clay and the sub-base aggregate — will move with it. The tell-tale signs are cracking across the middle of the drive, low spots where water pools, and edges that have lifted away from walls or borders.

On clay ground, our standard approach is to excavate deeper than we would on a sandy or chalk site, lay a geotextile membrane over the formation, and build up with compacted Type 1 before any surface course goes down. On longer drives we also design the falls and any linear drainage channels at the outset rather than waiting for a problem to appear. It takes a bit more time at the design stage but it is what separates a drive that looks the same in fifteen years from one that needs lifting in five.
