Block paving in Cobham
Cobham's residential character is shaped by its prestige end of the Surrey property market — the large detached houses along the Fairmile, the private plots off Between Streets and Stoke Road, and the older homes in Stoke D'Abernon where driveways can run to fifteen metres and beyond. On properties of this scale, block paving earns its place: the interlocking structure handles the occasional heavy vehicle load, the sub-base carries its own weight across a wide area, and the surface can be lifted and relaid in a section years from now without re-doing the whole drive.
We see a particular pattern in Cobham: older tarmac driveways on the larger plots that have served their time, where the owner now wants a finish that matches the quality of the house. Block paving — properly built to BS 7533, with the right base depth and the edge restraints that most budget quotes skip — does that job well. We bring Marshalls and Bradstone samples to every site visit so you can see colours and formats against your brickwork and ironwork before anything is decided.

How we work
We come out, measure up, and talk through what you want.
Spec, schedule, and price in writing — no surprises.
Rip-out, prep, surface. Tidy site each evening.
Walk-through on completion and a call back if anything settles in.
The Fairmile and the roads running off it have some of the widest residential driveways in the area. A surface laid across that sort of footprint needs to behave as a single engineered structure: the sub-base compacted in layers, the laying course screeded consistently, the edge restraints haunched before the blocks go down rather than tucked in afterwards. Block paving built this way distributes vehicle loads evenly and does not form the ruts and depressions that appear on large tarmac driveways when the base starts to flex.
Repairability is the other long-term advantage on a drive this size. If a section is damaged or a utility company excavates to reach a buried pipe, individual blocks can be lifted, the ground below remedied, and the surface relaid to match. A large resin or tarmac drive repaired in a patch is always visible; block paving repaired carefully is not. On a prestige property where the drive is part of the kerb appeal, that matters.
Cobham's soils vary between the heavier clay ground in the lower-lying parts of the village and better-draining soils on the rising ground towards Stoke D'Abernon and Downside. On the clay areas around the Mole valley floor we specify a geotextile membrane under the sub-base to prevent fines from the formation soil migrating up into the stone over time — a step that adds very little to the build cost but prevents the slow settlement that shows up as uneven paving five years in.
Standard block paving on a closed sub-base sheds water sideways, so any new or replacement drive needs the runoff managed: a fall to a planted border, a drainage channel, or a soakaway on your own land. We design this in at quote stage rather than treating it as an afterthought. On a large Cobham plot there is usually space to handle it elegantly.
FAQ
On a typical Cobham residential drive — often larger than average — allow around a week to ten working days for the full job, including excavation, sub-base, laying, and jointing. We give you a day-by-day programme with the written quote so you can plan around the access disruption.
For most residential properties the work sits within permitted development, but any new hard surface over 5m² must either be permeable or drain to a soakaway on your own land. Standard block paving on a closed sub-base is not permeable, so we design the drainage solution into every quote. Cobham is not uniformly within a conservation area, but we will flag any local designation at the site visit if it affects the material or colour options.
The older and more traditional houses on the Fairmile and in Stoke D'Abernon tend to suit Marshalls or Bradstone ranges in Tegula or rumbled finishes in Autumn or Buff tones — they read as warm and period-appropriate rather than stark. For more contemporary builds, larger-format linear blocks in graphite or slate grey are popular. We bring samples to every site visit so you can hold them against the brickwork in natural light.
Yes. Cobham is well within our regular working area and we can usually arrange a visit within a few working days. We measure up, assess the ground and existing surface, discuss drainage, and bring block samples. You receive a written quote and specification — no ballpark figures over the phone.
Tell us roughly what you'd like done. We'll come out and quote in writing.
