About Reigate
Reigate sits on the southern slope of the Greensand ridge, with Reigate Hill rising steeply to the north and the town spreading out through Woodhatch, Meadvale, and Redhill's softer western fringes below. The variety of properties here is remarkable: Victorian and Edwardian terraces packed tightly along the town's older streets, detached Thirties semis on the gentler slopes, and some genuinely substantial homes tucked into the hillside above the A217. Each one puts a different set of demands on the driveway in front of it.
The Greensand ridge changes the ground under your feet in ways that matter when we are building a sub-base. The well-draining sandy soils higher up around Reigate Hill are generally straightforward to work with, but the clay bands lower down in Woodhatch and Meadvale hold water and shift through a Surrey winter. Getting the sub-base depth and drainage right is not optional here — it is why some drives laid on a budget start dipping within a few years.
Reigate's conservation areas, including much of the historic town centre, mean that the appearance of a front drive or patio can matter to neighbours and planners alike. We work in these areas regularly and are straightforward about which finishes sit well with period brickwork and which ones would look out of place. A drive that suits the house is always a better investment than one that simply met the budget.
Areas we cover in Reigate
A significant stretch of Reigate town centre and its Victorian streets is designated as a conservation area. That does not automatically mean surfacing work needs planning consent — it still falls under permitted development in most cases — but it does mean that material choice carries more weight. Dropped kerbs, new drives, and patio replacements that look jarring against original stonework or period brickwork are harder to sell when you eventually come to market.
On period properties we generally steer owners towards block paving in a tone that complements the existing brickwork, or natural-look resin blends with warmer aggregate colours. Jet-black tarmac against a red-brick Victorian frontage is a look we would talk you through rather than just quote. The conversation takes five minutes at the site visit and tends to save regret later.
Properties above the town on the Reigate Hill side frequently have driveways on a gradient that requires careful drainage planning. A flat drive sheds water naturally; a sloped one channels it, and if the falls are not engineered correctly the water runs straight to the garage or front door. We use channel drainage or a cross-fall design to divert runoff to the edge or a soakaway rather than letting it travel down the length of the drive.
Resin on a slope needs a slightly different aggregate specification to the same product laid flat — the mix needs enough texture to give traction without looking coarse. It is a small detail but an important one, and it is the kind of thing that only shows up if the installer has done this type of job before.
Surfacing in Reigate
Yes — some of our most interesting residential work is on the hillside properties above the town. Sloped drives need more careful drainage design than flat ones, but there is nothing unusual about the work itself. We assess gradient and drainage at the site visit and put the solution in writing in the quote.
We work in Reigate's conservation areas regularly. Surfacing under permitted development does not usually require separate consent, but we will flag anything unusual at the site visit. We also take material and colour choice seriously in conservation areas — the right finish genuinely makes a difference to how the property reads from the street.
Clay soils move seasonally and hold water, which is why thin sub-bases fail on them. On clay ground we excavate deeper, lay a geotextile membrane before the sub-base aggregate, and increase the depth of compacted Type 1 to give the surface something stable to sit on. That adds a little to the cost but is what separates a ten-year drive from a three-year one.
A standard single or double driveway on a residential property is typically a two-to-three day job once we are on site. Larger or more complex jobs — significant excavation, drainage works, or a sloped plot — take longer, and we will give you a realistic programme in the quote rather than a number we then quietly extend.
