Surfacing in Surrey
Residential driveways, patios, and commercial work in Ashtead and the surrounding area.
BeforeAfterBefore & after
A clean, low-maintenance charcoal driveway with crisp borders, level ironwork, and proper drainage — comfortable parking for several vehicles where a failing concrete slab used to be.

Ashtead has a particular kind of character that shows up in the surfacing work we do there. It is a village that has grown up gradually rather than been planned, and the result is a mix of property types that rarely sits still for long — Victorian and Edwardian terraces along the older streets near the Common, inter-war detacheds and semis in the residential roads that fan out from the village centre, and larger rural plots on the outer edges where the gardens run deep and the frontages are wide. Each type needs a different approach.
Ashtead Common is one of the largest areas of ancient woodland in Surrey and it shapes the village in practical ways. The streets nearest the Common often carry mature tree roots close to the surface, which means any driveway work in those areas needs to account for root protection zones and avoid disturbing established trees. We are used to working with this constraint and will flag it clearly if it affects your plot.
The Marld area and the roads around Skinners Lane and the village centre have a more traditional feel that tends to steer clients towards block paving or natural-looking finishes rather than contemporary resin. That is a preference we understand — a modern resin drive can look out of place against a Victorian brick frontage, and we will say so if we think it does. Getting the material choice right for the period of the house makes a bigger difference to long-term satisfaction than almost anything else.
Areas we cover in Ashtead
Several of Ashtead's older residential streets carry a strongly period feel, and where properties are in or adjacent to conservation areas, the choice of surfacing material is genuinely part of the job. Block paving in a traditional buff or charcoal tone, or natural stone setts for smaller forecourt areas, tends to read far better against brick and tile than a smooth contemporary finish. We always walk round the front of the house before making a recommendation, because the best technical solution is not always the best visual one.
Surface colour matters more than most homeowners expect. A block-paving scheme in the wrong tone — too orange against grey brick, too dark against warm render — can make a well-built drive look wrong. We keep a broad range of samples on the van and will show you options in natural light before anything is decided.
On the outer edges of Ashtead, particularly the properties backing onto open land or with long entrance drives, the scale changes considerably. Here the primary questions are drainage across a larger area, whether the surface needs to handle any agricultural or larger vehicle movements, and how to manage the transition between a surfaced drive and surrounding grass or gravel.
Tarmac tends to be the most practical choice for long rural access drives where cost-per-metre matters and the visual setting is informal. For the main forecourt area in front of the house, block paving or resin can take over from the tarmac run and create a smarter finish at the entrance. Mixing materials on longer drives is something we do regularly and, done well, it works very effectively.
Surfacing in Ashtead
Surfacing your own driveway usually falls under permitted development even in a conservation area, but there are exceptions — particularly if the property is listed or if the frontage involves removing a boundary wall. We check this at the site visit and will flag any uncertainty before you commit. On conservation streets we also give honest advice about which materials suit the period of the building.
It can, yes. Root protection zones are a real consideration near Ashtead Common, and disturbing established roots risks damaging trees and can, in some cases, raise issues with the local authority. We assess this on site and, where needed, adjust the excavation depth or build up the surface level rather than digging down, which is kinder to the root system and avoids any planning complications.
Block paving in a traditional colour — buff, charcoal, or a mixed antique blend — is nearly always the best fit for a period property. Natural stone setts work well on smaller forecourts. We bring colour samples to every site visit so you can see options in the actual light at the front of your house rather than guessing from a brochure. We will tell you honestly if we think a contemporary resin finish would fight the building.
Yes — longer access drives are a regular part of our work in the Ashtead area. We price tarmac drives per metre and include a proper spec: compacted sub-base, binder course, surface course, and edge restraint. For very long drives we sometimes suggest tarmac for the access run and block paving or resin for the turning area at the front of the house, which keeps the cost down without compromising the look where it matters most.
